Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazzali (1058-1111) is one of the most important religious figures in Islamic history. He is particularly noted for his brilliant synthesis of mysticism and traditional Sunni Islam. Ghazzali's "The Alchemy of Happiness", written toward the end of his life, provides a succinct introduction to both the theory and practice of Sufism (Islamic mysticism). Father Damien an Open Let...
Father Damien (Damien de Veuster, 1840-1889) was a Roman Catholic missionary from Belgium. He went to the leper settlement at Molokai in 1873, where he helped the sufferers of the disease. Damien himself contracted leprosy and died of it in 1889. RLS’s pamphlet, Father Damien (March 1890) was a response to a letter from Reverend C.M. Hyde published in The Presbyterian newspaper on 26 October 1889. In the letter, Dr Hyde criticized Damien’s work at the leper settlement, which Stevenson took umbrage with. RLS was outraged that what he perceived as Damien’s selfless work with the lepers could be censured. RLS’s response was deeply scornful, attacking Hyde personally. Indeed, his pamphlet was filled with such vitriol, he was convinced (wrongly) that he would be sued for libel.

Theo
Theo is a short novelette about an impressionable and quite beautiful young girl of 16 who falls in love with an intelligent young man named Denis. Theo’s enchanting beauty and Denis’ intelligent and methodical, yet very pleasant character makes the two ideally suited for each other. Readers will quickly be able to tell just how easy the decision to stay together should be, at least under normal circumstances. The romance shared by Theo and Denis, however, starts out on a difficult path, as he is engaged to be married, and she does not want to intrude on his. Between strong emotions and an even stronger conviction to do the right thing, Burnett showers us with beautiful descriptions, interesting twists and an overall well-paced plot line that will make it quite difficult to even put the book down for a short pause.

Author's Note: This my first novel was written several years ago, and published (without any revision by me) first in a ladies' magazine under the name of "Dorothea," and afterwards in book form as "Dolly." For reasons not necessary to state here, all control over the book had passed from my hands. It has been for some time out of print; but, having at last obtained control of the copyright, I have made such corrections as seemed advisable, given it the name I originally intended for it, and now issue it through my regular publishers.
