A Tramp Abroad is a work of non-fiction travel literature by American author Mark Twain, published in 1880. The book details a journey by the author, with his friend Harris (a character created for the book, and based on his closest friend, Joseph Twichell), through central and southern Europe. While the stated goal of the journey is to walk most of the way, the men find themselves using other forms of transport as they traverse the continent. The book is often thought to be an unofficial sequel to an earlier Twain travel book,The Innocents Abroad. As the two men make their way through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, they encounter situations made all the more humorous by their reactions to them. The narrator (Twain) plays the part of the American tourist of the time, believing that he understands all that he sees, but in reality understanding none of it. The term “tramp” is meant as in a “walk-about” and not as in a “bum”.

Au mariage prôné par David, il préfère la liberté d'aller selon sa fantaisie jouer aux boules ou passer quinze jours dans sa ferme de Meisenthâl pour bâtir un réservoir à truites en dégustant la cuisine délectable de la petite Sûzel, la fille de son fermier Christel.C'est d'ailleurs à cause de ce réservoir à truites que, l'ami Fritz se retrouve en dan et de perdre sa vigne et son pari, ce que peu lui chaut on le verra dans ce roman qui eut un immense succès dès sa parution, tant il a de finesse d'observation et de fraîcheur. Les érudits nous l'ont appris : la Bavière où se situe le Hunebourg de Kobus a bien des traits de la Lorraine et du Phalsbourg d'Erckmann, de même que Sûzel incarne un amour de sa jeunesse. L'adaptation à la scène redonnera à l'intrigue son cadre français. Peu importe, au demeurant, car tel qu'il est L'Ami Fritz mérite une place parmi les grands « classiques ».

The author creates an unforgettable atmosphere: the gloom of the graveyard, the melancholy of the orphan boy, the mists rising over the marshes and the terrifying appearance of an escaped convict in chains. Told in first person (one of the only two books that Dickens used this form for, the other being David Copperfield) Great Expectations is a classic coming of age novel, in which we trace the growth and evolution of Pip or Philip Pirrip to give his full name. Pip has lost his parents very early in life and is being brought up by his much older sister and brother-in-law Joe Gargery. His sister is a dominating and shrewish woman, while Joe is an affectionate man. Joe's uncle Mr Pumblechook (another of Dickens' delightfully evocative names) asks Joe to send Pip to the stately mansion Statis House ostensibly to play with the owner Miss Havisham's adopted daughter Estella. This marks the beginning of a life-changing experience for Pip.
